I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

If water is still leaking, turn the water off at the nearest service valve or at the mains valve outside. If you cannot find the main valve or a tap to the appliance, then turn on all the cold taps inside and out to depressurise the household pipework and reduce the leak.

While you are waiting, remove any significant possessions from the area, and clean up any water or put a bucket to catch the drips. If you turned the mains water off, also switch off the hot water heating as well.
